“Los Cabos” is not a place. It is a thirty-kilometre corridor with a town at each end, a rural coast to the north-east, and a completely different ocean on the other side of the peninsula.
Choosing badly does not ruin a trip. It just means you spend it driving.
Cabo San Lucas
The marina, the nightlife, the charters and Medano — the one beach in town where you can swim comfortably.
Suits: short trips, groups, anyone who wants to walk to dinner and a boat. Trade-off: it is busy, and it is the loudest option by a distance.
The Tourist Corridor
The resorts and villas between the two towns, most of them above the highway with the view that sells the photograph.
Suits: villa stays, families, anyone prioritising the property itself. Trade-off: nothing is walkable. Every dinner is a drive, and swimmable beach access is property-specific — which is why the question to ask a villa is not about the view. It is whether you can actually get in the water at the bottom of the steps.
San José del Cabo
The colonial town: plaza, Art District, the municipal market, the estuary, and by some distance the best everyday eating in the municipality.
Suits: longer stays, repeat visitors, anyone who wants a town rather than a resort. Trade-off: the town beach is not reliably swimmable, and the marina is a short drive.
The East Cape
North-east of the airport toward Cabo Pulmo. Rougher roads, darker skies, far fewer people, genuinely spectacular water.
Suits: divers, kite surfers, anyone who wants quiet. Trade-off: distance. Plan on driving for anything, and rent something with clearance.
The Pacific side
Cerritos, Pescadero and on to Todos Santos. Cooler, windier, big surf and a different kind of town.
Suits: surfers, road trips, a two-night detour. Trade-off: the Pacific is not a casual swim. Respect it.
The rule of thumb
Pick where you want dinner. Everything else follows.
Walking to a bar and a boat: Cabo San Lucas. Walking to a plaza and a market: San José. Not walking anywhere, because the house is the point: the Corridor. Not seeing anyone: the East Cape. Surfing: the Pacific side.
